How do i fix Firefox problems on Windows 10?

Firefox issues can be problematic, and prevent you from using your browser. As for issues, we’ve complied a list of common problems that users reported with Firefox:

  • Firefox won’t open – This issue can occur if there’s a problem with your Firefox profile. To fix it, simply recreate the profile and check if that solves your issue.
  • Firefox too slow, using too much RAM – High RAM usage can occur due to your extensions, so be sure to disable all extensions that you don’t need and check if that helps.
  • Firefox high CPU usage – Sometimes high CPU usage can appear and cause issues with Firefox. This can be due to your antivirus, so be sure to disable it temporarily.
  • Firefox keeps crashing, freezing, not responding – Sometimes your configuration can cause problems with Firefox. However, you can fix that problem simply by starting Firefox in Safe Mode.

1. Check your antivirus

If you’re experiencing Firefox issues on your PC, the issue might be your antivirus software. Several users reported that HTTPS Scanning feature in Avast caused issues with Firefox, but you can fix this problem by doing the following:

  1. Open Avast from and choose Settings in the bottom left corner.
  2. Choose Components > Web Shield.
  3. Now click Customize button.
  4. Uncheck Enable HTTPS Scanning option and save changes.

If you’re using a different antivirus software, you might want to try disabling this or other similar features in it. In case that doesn’t work, your next step would be to completely disable your antivirus software.

Several users reported that this wasn’t effective, and according to them, they managed to fix the issue by removing their antivirus altogether.

If removing the antivirus solves your problem, you should consider switching to a different antivirus solution.

2. Disable problematic add-ons

  1. Open Firefox and click the Menu button in top right corner.
  2. Choose Add-ons from the list.
  3. Click the Extensions tab on the left. List of installed extensions should open.
  4. Now disable all extensions by clicking the Disable button.

  5. Restart Firefox and check if the issue is resolved.
  6. If the problem is fixed, you can try enabling extensions one by one until you find the one that is causing you problems.

If you can’t open Firefox at all, it’s always a good idea to run it from Safe Mode. To access Safe Mode do the following:

  1. Press the Start button, click the Power button, press and hold Shift on your keyboard and choose the Restart option.

  2. Once your computer restarts, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click the Restart button.
  3. After your computer restarts again press F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. When Safe Mode starts, try disabling any extensions from Firefox by following the steps above.

3. Start Firefox in Safe Mode

  1. Locate the Firefox shortcut on your desktop, hold the Shift key and double-click it.
  2. When the dialog box appears, click Start in Safe Mode button.
After doing that, Firefox should start in Safe Mode. If the issue doesn’t appear in Safe Mode, it’s possible that one of your extensions or settings are causing this issue.

4. Reinstall Firefox

If Firefox issues are interfering with your work, perhaps you should try reinstalling Firefox. Sometimes your installation can get corrupted, and that can cause various issues. However, you can fix that problem, simply by reinstalling Firefox.

How do i fix mozilla firefox not responding?

Solutions to fix mozilla firefox not responding :

Initiate a restart

The first thing to apply is a restart. If Firefox is not responding it means that something stopped its processes. And a restart might be the perfect solution for reinitiating everything. So, close Firefox (if the classic way isn’t working, close the program through Task Manager) and also restart your Windows 10 system. Finally, run Firefox and verify if everything works as it should now; if not, go to the next troubleshooting solution.

Update graphics card drivers

One reason why Firefox can run with issues is related to outdated drivers for the graphics card. So, you need to make sure that your Windows 10 system runs on the latest driver updates.
  1. Click on the Search icon – it’s located near the Windows start button.
  2. Type Device Manager and click on the same entry that will be displayed.

    3. From Device Manager expand the Display adapters option.

   4. Right click on each entry and choose ‘update driver software’.
   5. Done.

Disable hardware acceleration from Firefox

Hardware acceleration is a feature also related with your graphics card. In some situations, depending on certain graphic card setups, Firefox might get into a freeze loop when hardware acceleration is in use. So, let’s see how to turn this off:
  1. From top-right corner of Firefox click on the Menu icon.
  2. From the displayed list choose Options.
  3. Go to the General panel and look for the Performance entry.
  4. From there uncheck the ‘use recommended performance settings checkbox’ and also                 uncheck the ‘use hardware acceleration when available’ feature.

 5. Close Firefox and initiate your web browser again.

Remove Session Restore files

If there are multiple Session Restore packages saved, the web browser can run slowly or randomly stop from running.
  1. Click on the Menu icon, go to Help (?) and pick up Troubleshooting information.
  2. Click on Open Folder from Application Nasics.
  3. Click the Menu button again and from there select the ‘power-off’ option.
  4. From your profile folder delete the following file: sessionstore.js. Also, remove any associated files such as sessionstore-1.js and so on.

Reinitiate Firefox files

Firefox not responding in Windows 10 might be because some Firefox files are corrupted. So, you have to repair them. Here is how you can do that:
  1. First, go to the Firefox official web page and download a new installer file for your Windows 10 system.
  2. Don’t uninstall Firefox and don’t delete anything else.
  3. Close Firefox on your computer.
  4. On your computer go to the folder where Firefox is installed; there rename the program folder: for example from C:Program Filex (x86)Mozilla Firefox to C:Program Files (x86)Fx3805.
  5. Now, run the installer process by clicking on the downloaded Firefox executable file.
  6. In the end open Firefox and see if this helped you.

How to fix mozilla firefox not responding?

If you use a certain secure Internet browser for your office, business or home, you will have problems with slow response, and a high amount of your CPU’s resources being unnecessarily consumed.

1.) Disable:  Plugin-container.exe

The plug-in container was created to separate the plug-in processes within Firefox from the other necessary processes needed for FF to run. When plug-ins crash, the plug-in container will crash instead of crashing the entire browser and spoiling your Internet searching vibe. Disable the plug-in container if you have low memory or an older computer. This can be done by:
Heading up to the Firefox address bar, then typing:     about:config
Next, navigate to the lines:    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled…….. (you can type dom.ipc in the field under the address bar labeled: filter, for quicker access to the line needed)
click thumbnail to enlargeDouble click four of the lines as shown in the picture, to change their values from true to:   false

2.) Update Mozilla Firefox

Sometimes there are no problems contributing to Firefox not responding other than an outdated version that needs to be updated. Updates are helpful because they help fix acknowledged problems such as bug, crashes, hacker vulnerabilities, instability and more.

3.) Remove Firefox and reinstall it

If Firefox still refuses to cooperate and is causing problems with your productivity while working, feel free to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. First, you should take measures to backup and important bookmarks and favorites, to avoid losing any important information. Removing and reinstalling cures many problems that are related to the software, if no other solutions prove adequate.

4.) Check for virus infections

When you find no other reasonable causes for Firefox not responding, you should consider checking for viruses and malware. A good, currently updated program is recommended; a full scan is encouraged for best detection.

Fix mozilla firefox not responding

Some solutions to fix mozilla firefox not responding :

Force close restart and update

If you rarely experience instability, a temporary fix will be to force close Firefox and initiate a restart. If the error is caused by an internal bug or by a corrupted internal file forcing the client to update will resolve most of those errors. Once Mozilla Firefox becomes unresponsive, you won’t be able to close it the conventional way (via the close icon). However, you can easily close the program through Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Then, go to the Processes tab, select Firefox and click the End task button.

Once you manage to close the unresponsive application, go ahead an restart your operating system. At the next startup, open Firefox again and click the Menu icon in the top-right corner. Then, go to Help and click on About Firefox. Wait until the system checks if you have the latest version. If a new version is available, click on Restart and update Firefox and wait for the process to complete.

Check for the required access rights

A common reason why the Firefox browser becomes unresponsive is when the profile folder doesn’t have write permissions. This is quite a common occurence if Firefox uses a profile from a file system that was previously mounted with read-only permissions.
Luckily, you can easily change the settings of the profile folder to configure the proper permissions. Here’s how you can do this:
  1. Press Windows key + R to open up a Run box. Then, type “%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\” and hit Enter to open the folder containing the profile folders of Firefox.
   2. Go up one folder to reach the Firefox folder, then right-click on the Profiles folder and                     choose Properties.
   3. In the Properties window of Profiles, go to the General tab and make sure that the Read-only box not checked and hit the Apply button.
  4. If you found that the Read-only attribute was checked and you modified it go ahead reboot your computer. At the next startup, start using Firefox again and monitor it for any signs of  unresponsiveness.

Clearing the Cache & Cookies

Another popular fix that has enabled a lot of users to get rid of unresponsive periods was clearing the cache. By eliminating cached web page versions and cookies, you successfully eliminate a lot of potential culprits that might be causing the problem.
Here’s a quick guide on how to resolve unresponsive periods in Firefox by clearing the cache and Cookies:
  1. Open Firefox and go to menu icon (top-right corner), then click on Options.
  2. Then, go to the Privacy & Security tab, scroll down to Cached Web Content and click on the Clear Now button.

    3. Close FireFox and restart your computer. At the next startup, open Firefox again and see whether the      unresponsive periods have been resolved.
