How to fix mozilla firefox not responding?

If you use a certain secure Internet browser for your office, business or home, you will have problems with slow response, and a high amount of your CPU’s resources being unnecessarily consumed.

1.) Disable:  Plugin-container.exe

The plug-in container was created to separate the plug-in processes within Firefox from the other necessary processes needed for FF to run. When plug-ins crash, the plug-in container will crash instead of crashing the entire browser and spoiling your Internet searching vibe. Disable the plug-in container if you have low memory or an older computer. This can be done by:
Heading up to the Firefox address bar, then typing:     about:config
Next, navigate to the lines:    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled…….. (you can type dom.ipc in the field under the address bar labeled: filter, for quicker access to the line needed)
click thumbnail to enlargeDouble click four of the lines as shown in the picture, to change their values from true to:   false

2.) Update Mozilla Firefox

Sometimes there are no problems contributing to Firefox not responding other than an outdated version that needs to be updated. Updates are helpful because they help fix acknowledged problems such as bug, crashes, hacker vulnerabilities, instability and more.

3.) Remove Firefox and reinstall it

If Firefox still refuses to cooperate and is causing problems with your productivity while working, feel free to uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. First, you should take measures to backup and important bookmarks and favorites, to avoid losing any important information. Removing and reinstalling cures many problems that are related to the software, if no other solutions prove adequate.

4.) Check for virus infections

When you find no other reasonable causes for Firefox not responding, you should consider checking for viruses and malware. A good, currently updated program is recommended; a full scan is encouraged for best detection.

How to fix firefox is already running but not responding ?

This error occurs when Firefox is closed but is still running in the background. Firefox is either in the process of closing or is frozen and hasn’t quit properly. In rare situations, there may be a problem with your profile.

Steps to fix this issue :

Wait a Few Seconds :

If you’ve just closed all your Firefox windows and quickly tried to open a new one, you may see this message. This is because Firefox is still running in the background, doing housekeeping tasks and saving your data before quitting completely. If you wait a few seconds and try launching Firefox again, you may find that it opens properly.

End Firefox.exe in the Task Manager :

If waiting a few seconds didn’t help, then Firefox has failed to quit properly. While all Firefox windows may be closed, Firefox itself is still running in the background. It may be frozen and using no system resources or it may be chewing up your available CPU time.
Luckily, ending Firefox in the Task Manager is simple. First, open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Escape. You can also right-click your taskbar and select Task Manager.

Firefox won’t appear in the list of running applications because this list only shows applications with open windows. No problem – just click the Processes tab.

Type the letter and you should instantly jump to the firefox.exe process. You can also click the Image Name header to sort the process list alphabetically and locate firefox.exe.
Once you’ve located firefox.exe, select it and click the End Process button.
This is what the message means when it asks you to “close the existing Firefox process.”

Restart Your Computer :

Restarting your computer is the nuclear option and, quite frankly, isn’t a very good idea. If you encounter this error, you can always fix it without restarting your computer.
The “restart your computer” suggestion is for less-experienced users that may not want to deal with the Task Manager – restarting your computer works because it ends all the processes on your computer, including firefox.exe.

Fix mozilla firefox not responding

Some solutions to fix mozilla firefox not responding :

Force close restart and update

If you rarely experience instability, a temporary fix will be to force close Firefox and initiate a restart. If the error is caused by an internal bug or by a corrupted internal file forcing the client to update will resolve most of those errors. Once Mozilla Firefox becomes unresponsive, you won’t be able to close it the conventional way (via the close icon). However, you can easily close the program through Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Then, go to the Processes tab, select Firefox and click the End task button.

Once you manage to close the unresponsive application, go ahead an restart your operating system. At the next startup, open Firefox again and click the Menu icon in the top-right corner. Then, go to Help and click on About Firefox. Wait until the system checks if you have the latest version. If a new version is available, click on Restart and update Firefox and wait for the process to complete.

Check for the required access rights

A common reason why the Firefox browser becomes unresponsive is when the profile folder doesn’t have write permissions. This is quite a common occurence if Firefox uses a profile from a file system that was previously mounted with read-only permissions.
Luckily, you can easily change the settings of the profile folder to configure the proper permissions. Here’s how you can do this:
  1. Press Windows key + R to open up a Run box. Then, type “%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\” and hit Enter to open the folder containing the profile folders of Firefox.
   2. Go up one folder to reach the Firefox folder, then right-click on the Profiles folder and                     choose Properties.
   3. In the Properties window of Profiles, go to the General tab and make sure that the Read-only box not checked and hit the Apply button.
  4. If you found that the Read-only attribute was checked and you modified it go ahead reboot your computer. At the next startup, start using Firefox again and monitor it for any signs of  unresponsiveness.

Clearing the Cache & Cookies

Another popular fix that has enabled a lot of users to get rid of unresponsive periods was clearing the cache. By eliminating cached web page versions and cookies, you successfully eliminate a lot of potential culprits that might be causing the problem.
Here’s a quick guide on how to resolve unresponsive periods in Firefox by clearing the cache and Cookies:
  1. Open Firefox and go to menu icon (top-right corner), then click on Options.
  2. Then, go to the Privacy & Security tab, scroll down to Cached Web Content and click on the Clear Now button.

    3. Close FireFox and restart your computer. At the next startup, open Firefox again and see whether the      unresponsive periods have been resolved.

Fix firefox is already running but not responding

All of your personal settings, bookmarks, and other information are kept in your Firefox profile. Firefox needs an unlocked profile to start up, and if the profile is locked, it displays the message, Firefox is already running, but is not responding. This article explains what to do if you see this message and how to prevent it from showing at startup.

End Firefox processes :

If Firefox did not shut down normally when you last used it, Firefox might still be running in the background, even though it is not visible.
If you try to open it while it's running, an error message will appear with the option to click Close Firefox. If that doesn't solve the problem, restart your computer or try the following options.

Use the Windows Task Manager to close the existing Firefox process :

  1. Right-click on an empty spot in the Windows task bar and select Task Manager (or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
  2. When the Windows Task Manager opens, select the Processes tab.

     3. Select the entry for firefox.exe (press F on the keyboard to find it) and click                                End Process.
     4. Click Yes in the "Task Manager Warning" dialog that appears.
     5. Repeat the above steps to end any additional firefox.exe process, if more than one entry             is found, then exit the Windows Task Manager.
     6. Start Firefox normally.

Initialize the connection to a file share :

If you store the profile on a file share, try accessing the file share beforehand using Windows Explorer.

Check access rights :

Firefox must also have the right to create files in the profile folder. The error can occur if you try to use a profile from a file system mounted with read-only permission (e.g. a remote Windows share which doesn't have "Allow network users to change my files" checked).
To check if the profile folder has the proper permissions:
  1. Go to your Firefox profile folder.
  2. Go up one folder.
  3. Right-click on your profile folder and select Properties.
  4. Click on the General tab.
  5. Make sure Read-only is not checked marked.
