Solutions to fix it Firefox Hangs

Firefox hangs after using it for a long time

Update Firefox

The latest Firefox versions includes improvements in memory usage, especially during long sessions.

Restart Firefox

Firefox may hang if left open for long periods of time. To fix the issue, restart Firefox.

If you regularly leave Firefox open so that you return to where you left off, you may want to use Firefox's Session Restore feature.

Firefox hangs when downloading files or saving images

If Firefox hangs when you attempt to download a file or save an image, try these solutions:

Clear download history

Firefox may hang when downloading files if your download history has grown too large. To clear the download history:

  1. Click the Downloads button Screenshots down arrow icon fx55 on the toolbar, if it's available, or else click the Library 57 library icon button and click Downloads from the menu.
  2. Click Show All Downloads at the bottom of the Downloads panel. The Library window will open.
  3. Click the Clear Downloads button at the top of the Library window.
  4. Download some sample files to see if the hanging has stopped.

Choose a different download folder

Firefox may hang if the last download folder location (e.g. a shared volume or USB drive) is no longer available. To fix this:

  1. Click the menu button Fx57Menu and select Options.
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Downloads, select Save files to and click the Browse button.
  4. In the Choose Download Folder window, choose a new folder location.
  5. Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

See if you are now able to download files or save images. If this works, you can go back to your Firefox settings, if you wish, and select Always ask me where to save my files.

How to fix firefox running slow?

Solution 1 – Change your power settings to High Performance

Many users reported that Firefox is running slow on their PC, and this issue is most often caused by your power settings. According to users, Windows 10 sometimes changes your power plan to Power Saving once your upgrade to it, so it’s advised that you change your settings to High Performance. To do that, follow these steps:
  1. Press Windows Key + S and enter power settings. Choose Power and sleep settings from the menu.
    2. Now select Additional power settings.
3. Once the Power Options window opens select High Performance profile.

We have to mention that switching to High Performance mode will drain your battery faster due to increased power consumption, but Firefox should be working without any slowdowns.

Solution 2 – Switch to a different theme

This is a possible workaround, but few users reported that it works, so you might want to try it. According to users, switching to a different, less demanding theme fixes issues with slow Firefox on Windows 10. Users reported that using a theme such as High Contrast theme fixed all slowdown issues for them.
By changing the default theme to less demanding one, Firefox might not look visually appealing, but it should work faster than before. To change your Firefox theme do the following:
  1. Open Firefox and click the Menu button in the top right corner and choose Add-ons.
      2. Select Get Add-ons tab on the right and click Featured themes.
      3. Try to find a simple theme that won’t use too much of your resources and install it.

Solution 3 – Check your antivirus

If Firefox is slow on your Windows 10 PC, the problem might be your antivirus. Antivirus tool is a necessity, but sometimes your antivirus can interfere with your web browser and cause slowdowns. Many antivirus tools also tend to install various extensions in order to offer extra protection, but these extensions can also slow down your browser.
If Firefox is running slow, be sure to remove any extensions that are installed by your antivirus. These extensions aren’t mandatory, so you can disable or remove them without fear. In addition to extensions, you might want to check your antivirus settings and see if modifying your settings fixes the problem. Several users reported that disabling Active Protection feature fixed the problem for them, so you might want to try that.

Solution 4 – Change your settings

If your Firefox is running slow, the problem might be your settings. Sometimes certain Firefox services can interfere with Firefox and cause slowdowns to occur. However, you can fix that by doing the following:
  1. Click the Menu button in the top right corner and choose Options from the menu.

2. Select Privacy & Security from the menu on the left. Now scroll down to Permissions section and make sure that Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser option is disabled.

After disabling this option, check if the problem with Firefox is resolved.
